LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA®

In 2008, the YMCA of the USA partnered with LIVESTRONG  to help cancer survivors begin the journey toward recovery with the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program.

Part of the Y’s commitment to strengthening community through healthy living, the program offers adults affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person, not the disease.

Cancer diagnosis and treatment can take a tremendous toll on the spirit, mind, and body. When survivors are ready to begin the healing process and reclaim their health, the YMCA can help.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a researched-based program that provides adult cancer survivors with individualized attention and offers a unique approach to recovery for every participant. The 12-week program, provided at no cost to participants, meets twice a week for 90-minute sessions, that focus on:

  • Building muscle mass and strength
  • Increasing flexibility and endurance
  • Improving confidence and self-esteem
  • Learning about wellness, stress reduction techniques and how to continue healthful habits after the program has ended.

Most importantly, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA encourages a warm spirit of community—a safe, comfortable place to build relationships with other survivors.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA staff have been specially trained to work with cancer survivors and patients – we follow American College of Sports Medicine and American Cancer Society exercise guidelines. Our LIVESTRONG staff members are exercise experts who can understand their unique concerns and help address them safely.
